The greatest delight in listening to your recordings was the utter joy with which you met each bird encounter. Thanks for sharing!

PS I just got a new phone and the top storage issue on the last phone by a country mile was Merlin recordings. One could often hear me mutter, and delete some random app so I had more space for recordings.

Thank you for reading (and listening), Scot! I really enjoyed going through my recordings and reliving those joyful moments. (Still have more than 300 recordings to review, though!)

When I listened to the recording of Michael, I thought “Carolina Chickadee!” When I listened to the recording of you, I thought “Wtf is that?”

lol! 😅 Michael’s bird call was definitely more beautiful. But the plot thickens - there are no CACH where he made the recording. I’m still going oriole for now

Dang, Michael got a super-rare CACH. Good on him!

This is such a cool idea! Did you skim through to find specific recordings, or did you go through all of them? It’s such a candid way to capture a moment, much more so than a photo.

Speaking of candid moments, trying to mimic the birds is both hilarious and so relatable. I still do that sometimes because I’m never quick enough to pull out my phone, haha. Unfortunately, I have no guesses for what you were imitating, but I bet if we knew, they’d sound pretty decent!

But describing where a bird is? Nearly impossible sometimes. Especially when you’re excited, and they’re moving… like, there’s only so much you can do!

Also, I’m blown away by your best bird day!! That feels like it deserves an entire article on its own. Even just the Cerulean moment is so exciting to “witness” through your recording. Seeing a rare bird with a group is the best. It feels so much better to share the joy!

Side note: terrestrial shorebirds are unbeatable—woodcocks, Mountain Plovers, Thick-knees… all absolute top-tier birds.

I’m the same way when it comes to hoarding memories, haha. I truly think recording birds is underrated, though! There’s still so much to learn about how they communicate. The number of observations with audio on eBird for a lot of species is pitiful, so every single one is a win!

Thank you Sofia!! I started with the oldest recordings first, then tried to sort from longest to shortest…. I still have close to 300 recordings to go through so it’s very possible there are other gems still buried in there, haha. I also knew which day was my Best Bird Day so I specifically sought those out, and they did not disappoint.

I need to be better about adding recordings to eBird! I’m always hesitant since so many of my recordings come out sounding faraway and blurry. You have inspired me to try to get past my fears!

Also - terrestrial shorebirds!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
